FBI warns about scams that lure you in as a mobile beta-tester


Cybercriminals Target Victims via Mobile Beta-Testing Applications is the title of a recent official public service announcement from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Although the Feds stopped short of specifically mentioning any vendors or services, one of the main motives for criminals to use “beta-testing” is to trick Apple iPhone users into installing software that isn’t from the App Store.

Given that the broad lessons to be learnt here apply to all makes and models of mobile phones, and even certain feature phones, we assume that specifically mentioning Apple would not only be a little unjust but also would offer anyone who doesn’t have an Apple-branded phone a false sense of security.
