It’s becoming more common for ransomware to lock up data

According to research from Sophos released on Wednesday, threat actors encrypted data in three out of every four ransomware assaults last year, the highest rate of data encryption associated with ransomware in at least four years. Two-thirds of the 3,000 IT and cybersecurity leaders polled in 14 countries who took part in the survey indicated their companies had experienced a ransomware assault in the previous year, a recurrence of the statistics from 2022.

The lowest incidence of any industry over the last year was seen by businesses in the IT, technology, and telecommunications sector, which successfully avoided or prevented data encryption during half of all ransomware assaults. In 92% of all ransomware assaults, data encryption was used by businesses and professional services organisations, the study showed.
