The City of Oakland, California, said on February 10 that numerous systems had been taken offline as a result of a ransomware attack. Municipal CISOs struggle with issues like as dealing with rules, being targets for nation-state threat actors, and pursuing funding from governments with limited resources.

In response to the incident’s broad repercussions, which rendered city phone systems and several non-emergency services, such as its 311 phone system, inaccessible, Oakland declared a state of emergency four days later. The 311 system was among the numerous city services that were still not working as of February 24 as a powerful winter storm moved in.
