Open Source Ransomware Toolkit Cryptonite Turns Into Accidental Wiper Malware

Due to its “poor design and programming,” an open source ransomware toolkit by the name of Cryptonite has been seen in the wild with wiper capabilities. The malware, which is written in Python, uses the cryptography package’s Fernet module to encrypt files with the “.cryptn8” extension.

In contrast to other ransomware strains, Cryptonite was until recently distributed for free through a GitHub repository by an individual going by the moniker of CYBERDEVILZ. The original source code and all of its branches were later removed.
