Over 60K Adware Apps Posing as Cracked Versions of Popular Apps Target Android Devices

As part of a campaign that has been going on since October 2022, it has been discovered that thousands of adware apps for Android pose as cracked or modified versions of well-known applications to deliver unwanted adverts to users. A bulk of the detections were located, according to the Romanian cybersecurity firm, which claimed to have found 60,000 different apps containing the adware.

According to a technical analysis given with The Hacker News by Bitdefender, the campaigns objective is to aggressively install adware onto Android smartphones in order to generate cash. However, the threat actors involved can easily change their strategies to divert users to other malware types such as banking Trojans to steal credentials and financial information or ransomware, the report states.
