We’ve included a sample of a common tax fraud below, along with some advice for avoiding similar scams in the future. You must complete a Form W-9 in order to have the IRS confirm your personal information. You will need to fill out your name, address, and tax identification number on one of these forms.

In this instance, the Form W-9 is being utilised to entice users to download malicious software. Jerome Segura, our senior director of threat intelligence, discovered an email purporting to be from the “IRS Online Center” and bearing the subject line “IRS Tax Forms W-9.”
