Cybersecurity researchers from Akamai have developed two novel techniques to disrupt cryptomining botnets by exploiting the Stratum mining protocol. The first method, "bad shares," floods a mining proxy with invalid job results, getting it banned and shutting down operations. The second method forces a wallet ban by overloading a public mining pool with excessive login requests. A tool called XMRogue automates these attacks. While effective against Monero miners, the techniques can apply to other cryptocurrencies. These methods disable botnets without harming legitimate miners, forcing attackers to rebuild their infrastructure.
