Shadowy Hack-for-Hire Group Behind Sprawling Web of Global Cyberattacks

After an 11-month investigation by investigative journalists at Reuters into non-public data, a security vendor verified earlier reports linking an Indian hacker-for-hire group to multiple, occasionally disruptive, instances of cyber espionage and surveillance against people and organisations across the globe.


At least not in its original form or branding, the enigmatic group known as Appin, situated in New Delhi, is no longer in existence. However, Appin’s spies shamelessly — and occasionally clumsily — broke into computers owned by politicians, high-profile people, corporations and business leaders, government and military officials, and high-value individuals throughout the world for a number of years beginning about 2009.
