Verizon's 2025 DBIR Report Finds Spike in Cyberattacks, Complexity, and Supply Chain Threats


Verizon's latest Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) for 2025 paints a picture of a rapidly evolving and complex cyber threat landscape. Key findings show a significant increase in attacks leveraging third-party vulnerabilities, with supply chain involvement doubling to 30% of breaches. Direct vulnerability exploitation also jumped by 34%. Ransomware continues its rise, featuring in 44% of breaches (up 37%), though median ransom payments have decreased, possibly as more victims (64%) refuse to pay. Small and medium businesses (SMBs) are disproportionately affected, seeing ransomware in 88% of their breaches. Credential abuse (22%) and vulnerability exploitation (20%) remain top attack vectors. Espionage-motivated attacks are notably rising in manufacturing and healthcare. The report stresses the need for multi-layered defenses, strong credential policies, timely patching, and employee training.
