GitHub has launched the Secure Open Source Fund with $1.25 million to support 125 open source projects, aiming to enhance security and sustainability through financial aid, education, certification, and mentorship. Project maintainers will receive $10,000 in funding, bi-annual security health reports, access to GitHub Security Lab experts, and training on tools like Copilot and Secret Scanning. The initiative, which runs until January 7, 2025, seeks to foster a security-focused community of maintainers and funders, addressing the challenges of managing open source projects and ensuring their safety. Supported by over a dozen organizations, GitHub is welcoming more partners to join the effort.
