Microsoft has updated its Defender software to automatically detect unsafe WiFi connections, enhancing user security by adding a VPN layer for protection against potential cyber threats. The Defender will alert users when connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots deemed unsafe, based on specific detection heuristics. This feature, which is being rolled out to Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, also includes a "Privacy protection" VPN for users in select countries, aimed at encrypting traffic and masking user IPs on vulnerable networks. Currently available to Microsoft 365 subscribers, this privacy feature has a limit of 50GB of monthly traffic and excludes data-heavy applications. Microsoft emphasizes the service’s anonymized data collection, which focuses on VPN usage metrics and identified malicious hotspots. Defender now automatically detects unsafe WiFi connections and alerts users, adding a VPN layer for enhanced security. The feature is rolling out across multiple platforms and countries, with privacy protection available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
